Jewish tradition tells us that this World was created by the Jewish Alef Bet. Zohar says that all the letters, one after another, came before G-d and explained why the world should be created by them. But He decided, that only Bet and Alef are worthy. Torah starts with Bet: ”Bereshit Bara…”(Bereshit 1:1). Ten commandments start with Alef: ”Anochi…” (Shemot, 20:2-14). But Torah, and consequently our World consist of all the Alef Bet letters. Jewish letters are connected not only to the creation of the World, but also to every person individually. There is a tradition, when one finishes their personal Shemone Esre prayer (the central and most important part of each prayer) to say a passage from Scripture, which starts with the first letter of their name, and ends with the last one. It says in the book of the prophet Micah: ”...and the man of wisdom shall see thy name…” Rashi writes in his later commentary: ”From here we deduce that whoever recites daily a verse beginning [with the letter] and ending [with the letter] as his name begins and ends, the Torah saves him from Gehinnom. “ Jewish tradition is completely based on the Text, e.i. Torah, Prophets and Scriptures, Mishnah, Talmud and thousands upon thousands of commentaries. Be that Laws, Paraboles, or thousands of written responses, it is all part of the Text. The Text means letters. They, as a foundation, bear the whole mass of Jewish wisdom. I took a very difficult challenge upon myself. In my design I aim to unite one of the most common symbols with the meaning which is at heart of the Jewish letters in order to create something new and original. You might choose the first letter of a name, geographical location, or any meaningful and memorable event. At the same time a letter is a symbol of belonging and a sign only legible to the community. Great Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversary, birthday or any other holiday present!
